Music begins to atrophy when it departs too far from the dance... poetry begins to atrophy when it gets too far from music.
—Ezra Pound
A long poem is a test of invention which I take to be the polar star of poetry, as fancy is the sails, and imagination the rudder.
—John Keats
The sticking point I found with doing NaPoWriMo was that I needed to keep myself triggered to write new poems everyday. So this year, I'm going to be ready. It won't be my downfall! I'ma gathering my prompts and triggers so that I have a few to choose from:
I'll add more as I find 'em, yeah.
- Steve Schroeder's contest has generated a few ideas in the comments stream for new poems.
- This list of 100 is for visual artists but I think can also be useful for poems.
The archives are ripe for the picking. Raid those prompts! Plunder that booty. No, the other booty. Added: looks like they've added a daily prompt especially for April. Woohoo!
- Plus, a comprehensive list of poetry forms here and here.
- qarrtsiluni's call for ekphrasis poems, responding to their gallery of images [deadline 15 April].
- There's the random A Word A Day.
- And the slangy Urban Dictionary, which I see now has word of the day, too. Mm, fruity.
- Wow! Ms First Draft has heaps of prompts here and here. Coolio.
- Creative writing experiments
